In addition to a number of new laptops, smartphones, and a TV, Lenovo
announced the IdeaPad Yoga Ultrabook . This new multi-mode
notebook meets the specifications for an ultrabook and also has a
360-degree flip-and-fold design, this ultrabook also meets the 10-finger touch requirement.
"It is clear to us that consumers want their four screens: mobile
devices, tablets, notebooks and smart TVs and they want them to work
together seamlessly, anytime, anywhere. Whether a notebook that bends
and folds, or an all-in-one that puts the 'wide' into wide-angle,
today's announcements reflect our focus on delivering the inspirational
innovations that consumers are looking for," said Yang Yuanqing,
Chairman and CEO, Lenovo. "The IdeaPad YOGA multi-mode notebook
redefines the convergence and convertible user experience by bringing
together the best of traditional PCs, with the best of tablets and more.
The new IdeaPad Yoga, which
sports clever hinges that allow the 13-inch display to be pushed all the
way around so that the top cover touches the bottom side of the laptop.
That puts your 17mm thick Ultrabook
into ten-finger touch tablet territory — and disables the keyboard and
touchpad, in case you were worried how you’d grip the Yoga without
accidentally inputting gibberish into text windows.
What’s really cool about this ultrabook is the number of positions it
supports thanks to its dual-hinge flip design. Not only can you use the
IdeaPad Yoga in traditional notebook form, but you can also open the
display to full tablet mode or use the IdeaPad Yoga in stand or tent
mode.
As for those in-between uses,
Lenovo demonstrates a pair. First up is “tent mode” where the Yoga is
folded back with the screen at a 30-ish degree angle to the keyboard —
perfect for desktop touchscreen use. The other is “stand mode,” where
the screen lines up perpendicular to the keyboard and faces away from it
— which would be handy for lunchtime presentations.
Even at just 17mm thick and three pounds, the Yoga packs plenty of
harware muscle. That ten-point multitouch display pumps out 1600×900
pixels, and second-gen Intel Core processors, up to 8GB of RAM, and SSDs
up to 256GB make this a machine that’s flexible enough to handle a wide
variety of tasks and not merely positions.
Lenovo expects the IdeaPad Yoga to hit the street at around $1200 when it arrives later this year. It’s set to ship with Windows 8 preinstalled, and Lenovo’s promising the Yoga will be available at the launch of Microsoft’s next OS.
